Fish Moilee

I had this dish first at the restaurant of the hotel we were staying at in Periyar, Kerala. Even though, all of the food we tried in Kerala was very delicious, Fish Moilee with a so creamy coconut milk sauce was my favourite. It is very easy to make and is great comfort food!

You will need*:
600 g river fish/pomfret/some white fish/Salmon worked too
some lemon juice
2 medium onions
2-3 green chilies
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
8-10 curry leaves (I skip this as I cannot get it here)
2 tsp ginger paste
2 tsp garlic paste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 1/2 cup coconut milk
salt
oil

Clean the fish, cut it into medium size pieces, squeeze some lemon juice over it, add salt, mix it carefully and keep aside for 15 minutes. In that time, chop the onions, slice green chilies, get all ingredients ready.

Heat some oil and add mustard seeds. Wait for mustard seeds to crackle (cover the pot for that).

Add the onions and fry them stirring until they become soft and translucent. Add ginger and garlic pastes and stir for another minute.

Add the chilies, turmeric powder, curry leaves, and fish pieces, stir it well and cook on a high flame for another minute.

Finally, add the coconut milk and salt to taste.

Bring it to a boil, reduce the flame and cook it covered for 10 minutes. Serve it hot over a bowl of rice.

Enjoy!
